Overview

Phnom Kulen is an important place in Cambodian history. In 802 AD, King Jayavarman II is traditionally believed to have proclaimed independence and established the foundation of the Khmer Empire here. The mountain later became an important religious center, with ancient temples, carvings, and sacred sites hidden among the forest.

One of the most famous places on the mountain is the River of a Thousand Lingas, where hundreds of carvings of lingas and other symbols were carved into the riverbed. The water flowing over these ancient carvings was connected with Hindu religious beliefs and the importance of water.

Continue to the Reclining Buddha at Preah Ang Thom, a large Buddha carved into a sandstone boulder. This is a popular pilgrimage site for local people and an important spiritual place on the mountain.

After exploring the sacred sites, enjoy a relaxing visit to the Phnom Kulen Waterfall. Surrounded by forest, the waterfall is a great place to take photos, enjoy nature, and cool off in the water.

Weather
Hot and dry weather is expected throughout this tour. There is always the possibility of a shower or two, but it is likely to be dry most of the time. Midday temperatures are likely to be very hot, but most of the woodland sites we visit have low humidity.
Food

Khmer cuisine is similar to most Southeast Asian cooking, but rather less spicy. Good bread is available in many areas thanks to the French influence, and there is a surprisingly wide range of local brews to try.
